Rybinsk

About the city

A craft settlement, a fish settlement, the capital of the grain trade and the cradle of merchants, a large industrial city, a science city — all this is about Rybinsk. For hundreds of years, the city has changed names, location and power, but it has retained its special free spirit, which can only be understood by visiting here.

Rybinsk is a city on the banks of the Volga River and the Rybinsk Reservoir, and is the second largest city in the Yaroslavl Region. In the 19th century, it deservedly bore the title of the capital of merchants and boatmen. It was during this period that Rybinsk became the largest grain trading center. The status of a merchant city was not just a formality: every third inhabitant of the city was involved in trade, created and increased capital. It was thanks to the merchant class that the city acquired its unique architectural appearance. Today, the merchant quarters, decorated with signs in the pre-revolutionary style, are not only pleasing to the eye, but also serve as a kind of portal into the past, allowing you to feel the spirit of the ancient city. Rybinsk is a city where history comes to life at every turn, offering guests unforgettable experiences and immersion in the era of great commercial achievements.

TOP 5 attractions

1. The Transfiguration Cathedral

The business card and the main dominant of historical Rybinsk. The cathedral was built in 1838-1851 by the St. Petersburg architect Abraham Ivanovich Melnikov. Next to the cathedral is the bell tower, the oldest building on the square. With a height of 93 meters, it was built in 1795-1804 according to the project of the architect from Kostroma S.A. Vorotilov.

2. The building of the New Grain Exchange

It was built in 1912 in the "neo-Russian" style. The building is made of brick, and is lined with German tiles. More than two hundred colored tiles depicting double-headed eagles, beads, herbs, and flowers were used in its decoration, which gives the building an amazing beauty. The building is also distinguished by its extraordinary strength, because in order to withstand the ice and spring floods, its foundation of rubble stone was immersed in the ground for four meters. The construction of the new "bread exchange" demonstrated to the whole of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century the wealth, strength and power of the Rybinsk merchants. Industrialists and merchants from the White Sea to the Caspian Sea gathered here.

3. Red Square

Walking along the cobblestone square, surrounded by restored shopping malls decorated with pre-revolutionary inscriptions, it's like walking into another era. The stylized antique lanterns that illuminate the square in the evening add even more charm to this painting.

4. Fire tower

In 1912, according to the project of the city architect I.K. Khotin, a new tower was built, which became one of the tallest structures of its type in the country: it rushes up to 48 meters. It is not surprising that Rybinsk railway station has become the recognized dominant of the Stagnant Street. In addition, the structure was built using the latest technologies for that time, becoming one of the first structures in the Russian Empire with a reinforced concrete frame.

5. Karyakinsky garden

The Karyakinsky garden with gazebos and a fountain appeared on the initiative and at the expense of Karyakin in 1901 on the site of a former swamp. The city's second four-grade men's college is located next to it. The garden was created on a grand scale from the very beginning, it had about a hundred plants from different climatic zones.

what other cities to visit?

Each city is an amazing story:
«whatever a city, it's a city with a burrow». This proverb vividly reflects the authentic character of the «pearls» of Yaroslavia. And together they are like treasures in a box, which one wants to go through and admire endlessly. Nowhere in Russia is there such a constellation of closely juxtaposed protected and historical towns.
The main attraction of the Yaroslavl region is a constellation of 12 ancient cities: Yaroslavl, Gavrilov-Yam, Danilov, Lyubim, Myshkin, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Poshekhonye, Rostov the Great, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich and the flooded Mologa. Each of them has its own unique appearance and atmosphere.
