The temple is the main dominant feature of the right–bank part of the city. The Resurrection Cathedral consists of several buildings assembled into one picturesque group. The basis of the architectural monument of religious architecture is the cube of the main temple, crowned with five domes. The cathedral is surrounded on three sides by two-tiered galleries. There are two porches leading to the summer temple – from the south and west. At the end of the 17th century, a tent-roofed bell tower and three-tiered holy gates were built next to the temple. The temple was surrounded by a decorative fence in the middle of the 19th century.
The cathedral is richly decorated with figured masonry, relief patterns, and murals. Perhaps that is why there is a legend among the locals about the Italian architects who built this amazing temple.
The dimensions of the Resurrection Cathedral: length – 35 meters, width – 30 meters, height to the top of the cross – 49.7 meters. The height of the bell tower is almost 35 meters. In terms of its beauty, magnificent decor and size, the cathedral can compete with the best churches in Moscow and Yaroslavl.
The Resurrection Cathedral is distinguished by its rich interiors, a significant area of which is covered with wall paintings on biblical and literary subjects. The high-rise iconostasis, wooden and carved, was made in the XVIII century.
There are shrines in the cathedral, some of them older than the temple itself. The main shrine is the image of the All–Merciful Savior, made in the 15th century by St. Dionysius Glushitsky. The height of the icon is almost 3 meters, and the width is 2 meters 80 cm.
During all the years of Soviet rule, the cathedral was active. Since 1989, the tradition of holding processions with the image of the Savior has been revived in Tutaev. The last years of the life of the famous elder Archimandrite Pavel Gruzdev passed at the temple. Patriarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church Alexy II and Kirill attended the Resurrection Cathedral.
