In August 1998, the museum of THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN VODKA was opened in Uglich.

Why did the vodka museum open in Uglich? The Uglich land is the birthplace of the famous Pyotr Arsenyevich Smirnov, who is called the vodka king of Russia. It was he who founded the world-famous brand to this day. His alcoholic beverages have repeatedly won world exhibitions and were directly supplied to the royal courts of Italy and Norway. P.A. Smirnov himself received the title of supplier of the court of His Imperial Majesty, which gave him the right to depict the national emblem of Russia on the labels. An interesting and detailed tour of the museum tells about the life of Pyotr Smirnov and his production.

In the museum you can also see the first mechanized machine that poured wine and vodka, moonshine distillers of various designs, ancient korchagi - flat ceramic vessels with a wide throat, in which wine was made until the 15th century. There is a whole original exhibition of antique bottles (the oldest is a bottle from 1812), various drinking utensils - cupboards, cups and cupboards, stickers and labels from the pre–revolutionary and Soviet periods. Vodka produced in the Soviet Union is also presented.

The museum's motto: "Only vodka from Russia is real Russian vodka!"

There is a medal in the vodka museum — an exact copy of the one that Peter the Great awarded to the most inveterate drinkers. It is very difficult to wear it: the royal award weighs 6.8 kilograms.

The main element of the exhibition is the alcoholic products of 96 Russian factories – more than 800 varieties of vodka. Naturally, the main place in the exhibition is occupied by the products of factories with more than a century of history. And vodka is exhibited on a regional basis.

Guests have the opportunity to taste several varieties of Russian spirits, and in the shop at the museum to purchase alcoholic beverages from the oldest distilleries in Russia. In general, the museum's activities are initially aimed at working with visitors, at familiarizing them with the culture of drinking, so that the attitude towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages is competent.
