Here is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1654), one of the most ancient churches in the city. The Pokrovsky Temple stands on the territory of the former Novopokrovsky monastery, mentioned in documents of the XVII-XVIII centuries.
During the reign of Catherine the Great in 1771, the monastery was abolished. The Intercession Church became a parish church. There is practically no information about the Novo-Pokrovsky Monastery, even its foundation is lost in the haze of time. It is known that in 1724 the monastery had 10 cells.
During its existence, the temple has been rebuilt several times. The most significant alterations were carried out in the 19th century, the porch and the bell tower were less affected. In 1903, the foundation under the porch was rebuilt, the windows were restored, and the wall painting inside the temple was resumed.
In the left-bank part of the city, the Church of the Intercession remained active throughout the Soviet period, icons were brought here from the closed temples of the city and the district.
The ascetic Church of the Intercession pleases the eye with its simplicity, reliability and thoroughness. The tall tent-roofed bell tower, decorated with ornate tiles, contrasts with it. A particularly revered image of the Church of the Intercession is the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "The Addition of the Mind."
There is a legend about the history of the miraculous icon: A pious man who was engaged in painting icons became mentally ill. When consciousness returned to him, he prayed to the Blessed Virgin that she would restore his mind.
At his prayer, he was followed by a vision of the Virgin. She commanded him to paint the image in the form in which she appeared to him, and promised that if he did this, he would be well. Thus, this icon was painted by the artist during his return to consciousness and is called "Adding the mind." Every year, students of our school participate in the Divine Liturgy on the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.
