The castle of merchant Ponizovkin

An eclectic mansion built on the left bank of the Volga River in the 1910s by order of N.A. Ponizovkin.

The breeder's house was built in the middle of the starch and treacle factory so that it could be viewed from the Volga River by passenger ships as a powerful fortress in a bizarre style reminiscent of French castles with towers and mansard roofs. The style and grandeur of the building exceeded all expectations. The tall, stately building really looked very much like a medieval knight's castle. Massive foundation, corner towers in Romanesque style. All the walls were finished with facing tiles, and this gave the structure lightness and sophistication. The facade of the building is also magnificent: huge two-meter windows facing the Volga River, long and wide balconies in the center, and side turrets of different shapes. Ponizovkin's house was striking in its beauty and luxury not only from the outside, but also inside. This entire huge palace consisted of only 10-12 separate rooms, which makes it possible to conclude that each of the rooms was quite large in area.

Admission to the museum is by appointment.
