The museum was established in 1995. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only provincial forest museum among the museums of the central regions of Russia. It is located in a historic building: in the former trading house of the merchant S. V. Sveshnikov, built at the end of the XVIII century. The Museum (Department of Local History) is a center for environmental education and public education. The Fairy of the Forest's living room features animals, birds, fish, and insects native to our region, and hosts interactive programs dedicated to the ecology of the area. The Fairy of the Forest, which is the brand of the museum, will invite visitors to a fabulous world, tell a lot of amazing and interesting things about the forest and its inhabitants, about the healing properties of various forest herbs and berries.
The museum has a stylized Russian hut, furniture, clothes, kitchen utensils, bast shoes, spinning wheels and many other things are collected – material witnesses of history, sometimes the only ones, especially when it comes to times long gone.
The Local History department is open to individual visitors (self-guided tours of the exhibitions), as well as guided tours (by appointment) and photography. Guided tours are available for different age groups, starting from primary school age. The duration of the tour is from 1 hour to 2 hours.
Since 2016, during the reorganization, the museum has been attached to the Central Library of the Pervomaiskaya MCBS as a local history department.
