The Volga Monument

Rybinsk stands on the longest waterway in Europe, the Volga; there is also a famous monument celebrating the river, the Volga.

The 18-meter-high sculpture on a 10-meter pedestal was installed in 1953. The monument represents the Volga, the river-nurse, which the sculptor saw as a proud and strong Russian woman.

There is an interesting legend connected with the monument. According to her, the great symbol of the Mosfilm "Worker and Collective Farmer" was supposed to meet the ships coming along the Volga to Rybinsk. But, considering that the construction work at the Rybinsk hydroelectric complex had not yet been completed, the "Worker and Collective farmer" was installed on a pedestal near the VDNH in Moscow. Instead, a huge reinforced concrete "Mother Volga" was erected at the entrance to the locks from the Rybinsk reservoir. This is one of the main symbols of the city of Rybinsk, a monument to the time of accelerated modernization of our country.

The main attraction of the Yaroslavl region is a constellation of 12 ancient cities: Yaroslavl, Gavrilov-Yam, Danilov, Lyubim, Myshkin, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Poshekhonye, Rostov the Great, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich and the flooded Mologa. Each of them has its own unique appearance and atmosphere.
