Cathedral Belfry

The belfry of the Rostov Kremlin is located next to the Assumption Cathedral on Cathedral Square in Rostov the Great.

According to the plan of Metropolitan Jonah, a belfry was built around 1682 to the southeast of the Assumption Cathedral. At the same time, Moscow craftsmen Philip and Kiprian Andreev cast two huge bells for the belfry: "Polyeleine" in 1000 poods and "Swan" in 500 poods. Later, in 1688, master Flor Terentyev cast a large 2,000-pound bell, named Sysoy, in memory of Metropolitan Jonah's father. An additional tower-like volume was erected specially for this bell, adjacent to the northern facade of the former belfry. He somewhat disrupted the harmony of the overall composition of the cathedral square, but at the same time gave it great picturesqueness. It is valuable that a set of 15 bells has been completely preserved in the belfry.

The main attraction of the Yaroslavl region is a constellation of 12 ancient cities: Yaroslavl, Gavrilov-Yam, Danilov, Lyubim, Myshkin, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Poshekhonye, Rostov the Great, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich and the flooded Mologa. Each of them has its own unique appearance and atmosphere.
