At the beginning of Spasskaya Street, a huge three-story building stands facing the square, which invariably attracts attention. Such a large house is rare for old Uglich, so it is interesting.
It was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the second-class hotel of merchant Alexei Karpovich Posnov, its opening took place on January 4, 1907. The building was decorated in the so-called "brick" style. The simple, austere facades are broken by large windows. The corner is accentuated by a massive rectangular bay window, the most expressive detail of the two facades. In addition to the rooms, there was a restaurant and a sausage shop in the building.
The latter should be mentioned in particular, because Posnov was one of the largest sausage producers in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He even received a silver medal for his products at the Paris World's Fair in 1897. Further along the Volga River were the buildings of the factory, and on Spasskaya Street there was a two–story mansion. But that's all in the past. The only memory of Posnov's activities remains his hotel.
During the revolutionary events of 1919 She burned down. This fire became, as it were, the threshold of the terrible devastating fire of 1921, which destroyed the old merchant Uglich, its pride and glory - the ancient shopping square. The charred walls survived and stood until the 1930s, when the building was restored to house the headquarters of the Volgostroy NKVD, as the largest industrial construction took place in Uglich during these years. Later and up to the present day, the former hotel of the village is an ordinary apartment building. Its current design is mostly typical of the architecture of the 1950s, including plaster, painting and modest stucco.
