The gymnasium traces its history back to the end of the 19th century, when Alexey Leontyevich Kekin, a prominent Rostov merchant and philanthropist, decided to bequeath all his property to his hometown, including the opening of the gymnasium.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a competition was announced for the best building design for the gymnasium. The prize was awarded to the architect P.A. Trubnikov's plan.
The gymnasium has a large auditorium where the Olympics are held, sports and assembly halls, and an astronomical observatory.The small Art Nouveau-style building houses primary school and foreign language classrooms.
In the early 90s of the last century, a museum of local lore was opened in the gymnasium building, which has an interesting exposition with several thematic departments: "School History", "Military Glory", "Household items" and "Literary local lore".
