Once upon a time, the village of Smentsevo was the center of the Bolshaya Smentsevskaya volost in the Myshkinsky district of the Yaroslavl province. There were 42 villages in the parish, including the territory of the present village of Volga. There were three churches here in Smentsevo, on the high Volga coast, but in the 1930s all the buildings were completely lost.
The chapel-tomb of the nobleman, the owner of the estate, the manager of the Saratov branch of the Volga-Kama Bank, I. A. Pokrovsky remained the only religious building in the area, but neither time nor people spared the shrine.
Wishing to save the remnants of their past, the locals, with the blessing of Bishop Benjamin of Rybinsk, began rebuilding the chapel. On October 12, 2013, a wrought-iron cross was installed on the dome, and the facades and interior were restored over the next two years.
Residents of the Volga settlement, descendants of local noble families and simply caring people provided all possible assistance.
