Shinnik is a football arena located in Yaroslavl and is the home stadium of the football club of the same name. This is where Shinnik holds its games as part of the Russian championship and Cup. In the late 90s and early 2000s, namely in 1998 and 2004, the stadium hosted matches of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Until 1960, both the stadium and the football team were named Khimik.
In 2002, a huge video screen was installed at the stadium, which at that time was considered the largest in the country.
In 2008, a large-scale reconstruction project was planned, which was supposed to be completed by 2010, in time for the celebration of the Yaroslavl millennium. The project provided for the creation of a canopy over all the stands and the transformation of all the stands, except the east, into two-tiered ones. The east stand could not be rebuilt due to its proximity to the roadway. The athletics tracks were planned to be preserved. However, by the fall of 2010, only a new south stand had been built.
In 2011, on May 22, the Shinnik Stadium became the venue for the final match of the Russian Football Cup.
In 2012, Yaroslavl applied to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches, which involved a complete reconstruction of the stadium. However, the city was not included in the final list of host cities.
In the summer of 2017, the stadium was closed for reconstruction in preparation for the 2018 World Cup, as a possible training base for one of the participating teams. During the reconstruction, Shinnik played its home matches first at the Urozhay Stadium in the village of Karavaevo, Kostroma region, and then at the small arena of the Shinnik Stadium. The opening of the main arena after reconstruction took place on September 1, 2018, with a match between Shinnik and FC Nizhny Novgorod.
In 2020, the stadium's grass lawn was reinforced with synthetic fibers.
In 2022, the stadium was assigned the second category.
