The Rybinsk Sea, as it is often called by the people, is a large artificial reservoir located on the Volga River and its tributaries, such as the Sheksna and the Mologa. It is located in the north of the European part of Russia, covering mainly the Yaroslavl region, as well as partially the Tver and Vologda regions. The reservoir holds 25.4 cubic kilometers of water (total volume), of which 16.7 km3 is a useful volume. The water surface area is 4,580 square kilometers, and the height above sea level is 101.81 meters.

The main attraction of the Yaroslavl region is a constellation of 12 ancient cities: Yaroslavl, Gavrilov-Yam, Danilov, Lyubim, Myshkin, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Poshekhonye, Rostov the Great, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich and the flooded Mologa. Each of them has its own unique appearance and atmosphere.
