Historical significance
Porechye-Rybnoye is a working village in the Rostov region, founded as Porechye-Lovetskoye in the 14th century, a place of princely and royal falconry. The rich lake lands made the village a fishing center, which gave it its second name, Rybnoye.
In the 17th century, part of Lake Nero was transferred to neighboring villages, then the river district passed to Metropolitan Jonah Sysoevich, under whom the large settlement of Berezovo arose.
Horticulture and industry
Porechye became the birthplace of Rostov horticulture. According to legend, in 1719-1720, the tsar sent the inhabitants to study gardening in Holland. By the 18th century, a significant part of the peasants went to work in big cities as merchants and gardeners.
In the late 18th and 19th centuries, locals grew dozens of crops, including chicory, peas, and potatoes. The first processing plants in Russia appeared here: treacle (1812, D.I. Ustinov) and the oldest cyclor (Pykhovy). Later, there were canning enterprises, one of which, founded in 1880 by P.A. Korkunov, still operates today.
XX century
After 1918, power passed to the Soviets, and the factories were nationalized. In the 1930s, a large collective farm was established, which became a "millionaire" in 1940. At the same time, Porechye received the status of a working settlement.
During the war, the local cannery supplied the front. Today, Porechsky JSC produces canned dairy and vegetable products, spices and concentrates.
Architecture and cultural heritage
The layout of Porechye was formed in the 18th century under Count Orlov. In the 19th century, the village looked like a "rich, handsome city" with cobbled streets, numerous stone houses and three temples.
The main architectural object is the Nikitsky Church bell tower (1799-1810), one of the tallest rural bell towers in Russia (82 m). The temple ensemble was created with the participation of architects Giovanni and Domenico Gelardi.
The interiors of residential buildings with arches, stucco, and tiled stoves have been preserved — an important potential for tourism.
Traditions and events
The main national holiday is Nikitin Day (September 28), the end of the gardening season. His tradition is making glowing lanterns from vegetables.
Another major event is the Day of the Green Cucumber and the fair "Made in Porechye" with products from local craftsmen.
In 2023, Porechye-Rybnoye joined the Association "The most beautiful villages and towns in Russia".
