Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve

The Yaroslavl State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve traces its origins to the museums of scientific societies that arose in Yaroslavl during the post-Reform period. The date of its foundation is considered to be January 12 (old style), 1865, when the public opening of the museum of the Society for the study of Yaroslavl province in the natural-historical relation took place. The museum-reserve in Yaroslavl includes the ensemble of the former Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery – Bishop's House (founded in the 13th century), as well as outstanding monuments of Yaroslavl architecture and painting of the 17th century. Churches of Elijah the Prophet, John Chrysostom, John the Baptist, Nicholas Nadein, the Nativity, Epiphany.

Today, in addition to the aforementioned temples and the monastery ensemble, the museum-reserve includes: the L. V. Sobinov Memorial House Museum, the Museum of Military Glory, and the Cosmos Museum (in the birthplace of the first female cosmonaut, V. V. Tereshkova, in the village of Nikulskoye, Tutaevsky district). All the main expositions of the museum-reserve are located on the territory of the Spassky Monastery: natural history, historical, treasures of Yaroslavl, as well as the exposition "The Word about Igor's Regiment - an outstanding monument of Ancient Russian Culture", unique in Russia, dedicated to an outstanding monument of ancient Russian literature.

The main attraction of the Yaroslavl region is a constellation of 12 ancient cities: Yaroslavl, Gavrilov-Yam, Danilov, Lyubim, Myshkin, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Poshekhonye, Rostov the Great, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Uglich and the flooded Mologa. Each of them has its own unique appearance and atmosphere.
