The Uglich Kremlin is a unique historical, architectural and park complex. In the city center on an area of 33,560 square meters. nearby there are architectural monuments of the XV–XIX centuries, an extensive park area: tree plantations of the XIX–XX centuries, a pond and a moat have been preserved.
The Uglich Kremlin was built on the high right bank of the Volga River, between the Shelkovka River and Kamenny Brook flowing into it, which previously provided natural protection for the fortress, reinforced by a moat dug from Shelkovka to Kamenny Brook.
The Kremlin was once fortified with ramparts and wooden walls, which were repeatedly destroyed. The last time the walls, towers and bridges were rebuilt was in 1660-1662. After 100 years, they were dismantled due to dilapidation and uselessness. Now only the remains of the moat remind of them.
On June 3, 1892, the Museum of Russian Antiquities was opened in the oldest building of the Kremlin, the Chamber of the Palace of the Uglich appanage princes. In the following 20th century, the entire Kremlin became a museum.
An ensemble of buildings from the XV–XIX centuries has been preserved from earlier times, including the princely chambers, the church of Dimitri Tsarevich and the building of the former City Duma, which house the museum's expositions, and the Transfiguration Cathedral with a bell tower– the main functioning temple of Uglich.
The park on the territory of the Uglich Kremlin is a valuable monument of landscape art of the second half - the end of the XIX century. Five alleys fan out from the entrance to the Kremlin – Nikolsky Bridge. Initially, the park consisted of lime and birch trees. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many rare trees appeared in it: thuja, chestnuts, cedars, larches. The thuja next to the Chamber of the Princely Palace was included in the National Register of Old-growth Trees of Russia in 2022.
In 2015, a monument to "Tsarevich Dimitri the Murdered" was erected on the territory, and in 2021 and 2022, tactile models of the Chamber of the Palace of the Uglich appanage princes and the church of Tsarevich Dimitri were installed.
The territory of the Uglich Kremlin is a venue for festivals, holidays, concerts, open-air exhibitions and other programs of the Uglich Museum and citywide events, as well as a favorite place for recreation and walks of Uglich residents and guests of the city.
