The Church of St. John the Theologian on the Ishna River (built in 1687) is the only ancient wooden church in the Yaroslavl region. It is located in its historical place: both at the end of the 17th century and now – on the banks of the Ishni River, in the village of Bogoslov, 3 km southwest of Rostov the Great. An object of cultural heritage of federal significance, a branch of the Rostov Kremlin Museum.
The building is two-storeyed and consists of a basement and a church proper. In the 19th century, the current bell tower was added to the temple from the west, the southern part of the gallery was dismantled, and the church was sheathed in wood.
The church has a carved choir stalls, painted fragments of the original tyablov iconostasis and a carved gilded royal gate, a replica of the gate made in 1883-1884 by Rostov carver V. L. Nikolsky in 1562.
The artistic and historical value of the monument was realized back in the 19th century. The artist V. V. Vereshchagin has depicted the interior of this temple, its iconostasis, porch, and choir stalls in several works.
Folklore festivals and museum events are held here.
