The Russian State Academic Drama Theater named after Fyodor Volkov in Yaroslavl is the first Russian professional theater founded in 1750. The theater is named after the founder, the merchant's son Fyodor Volkov, director, actor, artist, entrepreneur, cultural trader: starting with a barn on the banks of the Volga and an amateur troupe, he brought his theater to a professional level, for which he was called to St. Petersburg to raise the theatrical business there.

In the XIX century, the Yaroslavl theater was famous not only as the oldest, but also as one of the best, by the XX century the name of Volkov was finally fixed on it. In Soviet times, the theater received the status of an academic one.

The theater is located in a building built in 1911 (architect – Nikolai Spirin).

Currently, the artistic director of the theater is Valery Kirillov, People's Artist of Russia. Now the poster of the First Russian features the names of leading Russian and European directors, bold and cutting–edge productions. Every year the theater organizes two forums: the International Volkov Festival under the motto "Russian Drama in the languages of the world", which is one of the five largest theater forums in the country, and the youth festival "The Future of Theatrical Russia".

The theater and its actors are the winners of many prestigious awards, including four national theater awards "Golden Mask"
