The creators of the monument are a Moscow team of authors. The sketch of the monument was created by Mikhail Tocheny, a Moscow sculptor, graphic artist and landscape architect, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia, A. N. Kovalchuk, a sculptor, and M. Korsi, an architect. The monument to the millennium of Yaroslavl is a granite column, 20 meters high, crowned by a bronze sculpture of the coat of arms of the Russian Empire, a double-headed eagle. The column is mounted on a pedestal that strongly resembles an Orthodox church in shape.
There are 5 figures on the pedestal. This is Yaroslav the Wise, the founding prince of the city, followed by an Orthodox priest, in whom many recognize Patriarch Tikhon, a warrior, a citizen, and a mother with a child. There are also bas-reliefs on the pedestal that depict the most significant events for Yaroslavl over the past thousand years: the founding of the city, the acquisition of the icon of the Mother of God of Tolga, the gathering of the militia by Minin and Pozharsky, the development of industry and science, the war of 1812, the Great Patriotic War, space exploration (on this bas-relief you can recognize Valentina Tereshkova, a native of Yaroslavl land), and a bas-relief depicting a modern city.
