A walk through Pleshcheyevskaya and Rybnaya Sloboda

Walking tour of the historical district of Pereslavl-Zalessky, located on the shores of Lake Pleshcheyev and the Trubezh River.

The route starts along Pleshcheyevskaya Street, then across the bridge and along the Left embankment of the Trubezh River, enters Rybnaya Sloboda.  Historically, the Settlement was created in the city to catch grouse (royal herring) and deliver it to the court of the great Moscow princes. The settlement has survived to the present day under the same name, it is also abbreviated as "Fishermen". This small corner of Pereslavl, comfortably located at the mouth of the Trubezh River.

    The two-storey spacious Sorokosvyatskaya Church is located in the most picturesque place of Pereslavl-Zalessky, on the outskirts of the ancient Fishing settlement, where the Trubezh River flows into Lake Pleshcheyevo. This temple attracts attention not only with its beautiful location, but also with its elegant white details on a bright red background. Since ancient times, the church, erected in the name of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, served as a kind of lighthouse for fishermen engaged in fishing far away on the lake.

     Among all the temples in the city, this is the only church that did not close during the Soviet years.

    Attracting attention with its discreet but exquisite beauty, the Church of the Intercession is a typical example of provincial architecture of the second half of the XVIII century. But its internal content, corresponding to the XIX – early XX centuries, is especially noteworthy. 

  • 3. Znamenskaya Church

    The elegant Church of the Sign of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located away from the noisy highway – at the western gate of the city wall, in the immediate vicinity of St. Nicholas Monastery. According to legend, in this corner of Pereslavl in the XIV century, Dmitry Donskoy's wife Evdokia, who later founded a wooden church here, was able to escape the persecution of Khan Tokhtamysh.

    In such a remarkable place, the Znamensky Temple, after a fire or dilapidation, was repeatedly restored, but already in stone. Nearby, on the banks of the Trubezh River, in the XVIII century there were Peter's funny ships that burned down in a city fire.

    The current church, decorated with mosaics on the outside, was built quite recently based on architectural motifs of the XVII century.

    The preserved buildings of the monastery of the XVIII-XXI centuries, of which the objects of cultural heritage are the buildings of the XVIII – beginning. XX centuries.

    According to legend, the monastery in the name of St. Nicholas was founded in a swamp near the ancient walls of Pereslavl in the XIV century by the son of a Pereslavl merchant, now a well-known Russian saint, Dimitri Prilutsky, a disciple and friend of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

  • 5. Smolensk-Cornelius Church

    The Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, according to legend, built with the participation of Tsarevna Natalia Alekseevna, is located in close proximity to St. Nicholas Convent. Until 1764, this church was part of the ensemble of the ancient "Borisoglebsky monastery on the sands". The monastery, which no longer exists in the XVII century, was associated with the asceticism of a locally revered saint who once took a vow of silence, Cornelius the Silent, whose relics now rest in the neighboring Nikolsky Monastery.
