The measured pace of Rostov Veliky's life will allow you to take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian center of the city. See the famous Rostov Kremlin and the Assumption Cathedral. Walk through the Dutch Fortress, go down to the lake and take a trip along the embankment. The route includes the new Vasilko Square.

The pedestrian center is full of natural and architectural monuments. Everyone will be able to find something suitable for themselves.

  • 1. Cathedral Square

    It is believed that back in the XI century there was a wooden church here, and the first stone building was erected under Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in the 1220s. The extant structure was built in 1512, and a separate belfry was added later. Valuable frescoes of the XVI–XVII centuries, discovered during the restoration, as well as the graves of princes and metropolitans of the city, have been preserved inside.

    In the 18th and 19th centuries, the wooden center, according to the Regular Plan of 1779, was rebuilt in stone at the expense of local merchants. The route runs along the Rostov Kremlin.

    The Kremlin complex was built in the 17th century, when Rostov was no longer of strategic importance, so its structures were not suitable for protection from the enemy: wide entrance gates, windows with architraves, lack of places for convenient location of defenders. The complex consists of 11 towers, churches, "chambers" and a number of civil buildings.

    The defensive earthworks of Rostov the Great began to be built in 1632 and were completed two years later in 1634. The author and construction supervisor was Dutch engineer Jan Cornelius Rodenburg from Amsterdam, who was invited to the court of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich in 1631.

    The first settlements appeared here 6 thousand years ago, in the VII – IX centuries the Merya tribe lived here, thanks to which, according to one version, the name "Nero" appeared near the lake.

    The installation of the Worship Cross took place on June 4, 2015.

    The author of the project was Nikolai Alexandrovich Mukhin. A 3.7-meter-high granite cross was erected on the shore of Lake Nero on a huge boulder weighing 18 tons. The cross was erected in memory of the baptism of Rostov residents in the waters of the lake in 991 by Prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles.

    It received its current name in honor of the outstanding Russian artist, Peter Petrovichev, thanks to the initiative of the museum staff. The former name is Sacco Street.

    In his youth, the artist worked as a restorer in the Rostov Kremlin, then he came home more than once, dedicating several dozen landscapes to ancient Rostov. The windows of his studio looked out onto the street that is named after him.

    This is a new recreation and walking area. Trees and shrubs have been planted here, pedestrian paths have been paved, street lighting and bike parking have been installed.

    The square was named after Prince Vasilko of Rostov, grandson of Vsevolod Bolshoe Gnezdo.

    In 1218, Vasilko received Rostov from his father as an inheritance; in 1223, on the orders of his uncle, Grand Duke Yuri, he went to help the southern princes against the Tatars, but after learning about the battle on Kalka, he returned to Rostov. According to the chronicle, he was loved by both the Rostov residents and his squad. The church honors St. Basil as a heroic defender of the Russian Land.

    On March 4, 1238, a decisive battle took place on the City River. The Tatars managed to surround the Russian army with an unexpected maneuver. The wounded Vasilko was brought to Batu's headquarters. Despite flattering promises of glory and threats of terrible torment, the pious prince refused to enter the service of Batu and accept his faith. The Church honors Saint Vasilko as a passion-bearing ascetic, a heroic defender of the Russian land.
